Group Name: Unique Sisters
Year Formed: 1996
Music: Feel happy music (R&B and dance)
Status: Tanzania's first serious female R&B groupBACKGROUND
Unique Sisters is a group made up of two sisters, Radhia and Rahima
Ahmed. The two hit the scene with the release of their single Hot
Summer Day re-mix in the mid of 1998. The sisters started singing when
they were little girls. They were imitating singers like the queen of
hihop suol Mary J Blige. In 1996 togather with a guy called Gerald
they formed a group called G'z Mob. The group recorded a single called
Leo Ni Leo at Mawingu studios. G'z Mob was more inclined to hiphop.
But the sisters wanted to make their music much mellower and
juicy.
They wanted to spice it more with soul and R&B. So without Gerald, they formed Unique Sisters. The group first perfomed at a competition organised by Clouds
Ent. late in 1997 and they won a first place. Dar Es Salaam hot producer Master J heard them and came up with an instrumental track for them to drop a gem on. |

The Unix, came with the remix, Hot Summer Day remix and it was an instant hit. Chief
Rhymson, from the ethnic group Kwanzania proposed a video clip. Rhymson ran things while the Unix boomblasted and video came out. It was superb. one of the best ever locally produced. This video made them a very popular group in the city. Hot Summer Day remix is cool mid tempo beeping like a Timbaland manufacture. It is a psychological aspirin, relieves pain and induces
happines. This is a unique mixture of talents. Radhia doubles as a vocalist and a smooth flowing rapper wgile Radhia is a slinky vocalist. Another project from the Unix is called Weekend Groove.

"Then this guy Master J approached us and proposed we do a song togather. We came up with Hot Summer Day remix. After that Rhymson of ITV came with the idea of the video clip. It was shot University of Dar Es Salaam under his direction" says Radhia. Only a few music fans knew about them, says Radhia, until they were interviewd by Masoud Masoud of ITV's Dar Wiki Hii. "Thats where most the people saw us for the first time". This single was great success and the Unix earned more fans because of it. "They sing along with us when on stage" says Radhia. "They even scream once we finish" she says. Unix describe their music as "teenage love thang". "A lot other artists have come up with warning messages on AIDS, drugs...so we decided to take another direction" says Rahima. "Sometimes you need to forget about the worries of life and just have fun" adds Radhia. They say they would like to see more female artists on the scene. "we feel so alone" points Radhia. Currently the group is managed by Wilbert "Chill Will" Simms the CEO of Powerlight Productions. The company is based in North Carolina. "Chill Will" first heard them when singing at Radio One's DJ show they say. "Now he is searching for a label to sign us" says Radhia. Rahima likes music by Eryka Badu and Brian McKnight while Radhia's favourites include Queen Pen and Lil' Kim. "I like swimming reading novels and cooking" says Radhia. "in the future I would like to be a Beautician" she says. Rahima plans of becoming a designer. "I like swimming and learning languages" she adds.
